Where is it?

Salem is half-way between Grahamstown and Kenton-on-sea  It's a tranquil, gently hilly area where unusual flora, fauna and birds abound. A botanist's paradise!

If you feel like exploring Grahamstown, Kenton, and surrounding villages, make Pets Place your base! You can have a day here and there, and discover the unspoiled Eastern Cape.

Pets' Place is set in a pretty country valley. Sometimes wild buck are to be seen drinking from the river. Tree-climbing dassies and monkeys are common sights. There are odd creatures like spring hare which look like a cross between a rabbit and a kangaroo which only come out at night. Porcupine also come to visit at night.

Salem

Visit the stone churches built by the 1820 British settlers. The churches are always open, and are still in use. The Sunday meeting is at 8.30 am. Holidaymakers welcome. Casual dress is OK! Wander round the graveyard and read the stories of the settler families. They came by sailing ship from England, were taken inland by ox-wagon, and dropped in the middle of nowhere. They lived in tents until they could build stone cottages. Water was fetched from the river in buckets. Many of the cottages are still in use today.

The cricket pitch in Salem is thought to be the oldest cricket pitch in the country that is still in use.

Accommodation

The 2 bed roomed cottage has 6 bunks. There is a separate shower-toilet with hot water. The kitchen is equipped with microwave, fridge, washing machine, electricity, pots, crockery, utensils, etc. All you need to bring is towels and food for the first meal. Food can be purchased in Grahamstown or Kenton.  Grahamstown is the nearest town, which is 20 mins drive.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome to sleep in the cottage, or outdoors in the fenced garden kennel if preferred. We will clean up the poop for you! Should you need a pet-sitter, you are welcome to make use of our kennels, where trained full-time, dedicated pet-staff will attend to your pet's every need, at no extra charge. (The kennels are not available in Dec/Jan.)

Cats, birds, & small pets

All pets are welcome! Parrots, hamsters and small pets will need their own cage. You can even bring your cat! Cats are accommodated in our cattery, where you can visit every day and sit with your cat on your lap. We will change the litter box for you.

The accommodation is at a boarding kennel, so you might occasionally hear barking at night. They don't ALWAYS bark, but sometimes one dog espies a porcupine, spring hare, or other exciting nocturnal animal, and sets the others off barking. We are dog-lovers here, and we don't scold dogs for barking.

Water

The local tap water tastes salty, so we don't use if for drinking or cooking. Drinking/cooking water will be provided in a container.

Salem means "peace." I think it's Hebrew. We read in Psalm 76 verse 2 that God lives in Salem! So may God's peace go home with you when you return from visiting this peaceful valley!
