I was born and raised in Kenya, and
Marsabit is a small volcanic forested mountain in the middle of the desert in
northern Kenya. In the centre of the volcano is Lake Paradise. Marsabit was the
home to largest and famous Elephant – Ahmed. (See Marsabit National Park guide)
As a child we always had Golden Labradors as my father was a keen hunter. The
hunters were given permission to shoot wild birds in the areas where they had
wheat and rice plantations and these Franklin partridges would otherwise eat all
the rice and wheat harvest.
We had an exceptionally intelligent Labrador male whose father was imported from
UK from the Sandringham (Queen Of UK Labrador kennels) line of working dogs. He
learned exceptionally quickly, and not only was he a magnificent gundog, he also
competed in Obedience up to Test B, Companion Dog trials, and Gundog open
Working trials and Completed Schutzhund 1 with excellent results.
My father was a Labrador judge for conformation and working tests, obedience and
gundog trials.
Our first chocolate Labrador was Coco whose father was a Show Champion Toby. She
lived a long and healthy life and died when she was 15 years old. As the
chocolate lines in South Africa were limited at that time, we imported a
Chocolate male from UK from the Foulby kennels…. Foulby Distctly Brown of
Marsabet...Our Cadbury. Cadbury is the father and grandfather of some well know
champions in the show ring today. Sadly he is no longer with us, but we have
saved semen from him which is kept under strict conditions at Taurus in Irene.
He can be seen on the Labrador club web site under stud dogs.
Cadbury's daughters and granddaughters were bred to top Imported dogs and
champions like Tom, Pirate (uk line), Shooter (South American line) , Sergeant
(UK import) and Bruno (Danish import). Our original dogs were DNA tested for PRA
through the USA Optigen group and happy to say that they were clear. All our
breeding dogs are PRA clear through their parents/grandparents. All breeding
dogs have elbows and Hips x-rayed and are Certified. Our Current Stud dog is
Jack Daniels and he is from UK imported Parents.
Our dogs are long lived and healthy. All Labradors need to attend puppy training
classes as this is how we are able to communicate with them. Labradors need a
lot of human contact and we recommend that they are indoor dogs, so they become
easy to train and live with. Dogs that live outside have little human
contact/interaction and become wild and boisterous and can become
uncontrollable. They are great with children and love to play and retrieve.
Please don’t leave small children alone with your puppy or dog as small children
can accidentally hurt them. If you are looking for an active, intelligent dog to
be a family companion, a Labrador is the dog for you.
