The Cocker Spaniel is a descendant of the Springer Spaniel, which was the original English spaniel. They say that cockers get their name from hunting the bird called "woodcock." The woodcock has brown mottled plumage which makes it hard to spot on the ground, but dogs could sniff them out. Woodcocks like to peck for worms in woodlands at dusk, or in shallow water. Spaniels like water too, so make sure your swimming pool is fenced off and puppy-proof. The feathers of woodcock have been used by artists as paint brushes, which could be one reason they were hunted. Cocker spaniel breeder.
